The only Heartless that drops Blaze Shards consistently are Red Nocturnes. These little red floating heartless can be found most everywhere, but the best place to farm them is at the Castle Gates in Hollow Bastion.
Five appear there in the first wave and will keep reappearing as you enter and exit in and out of the nearby Entrance Hall.
It’s a simple farming loop:
- Enter Hollow Bastion at the Rising Falls and climb up to the Castle Gates
- Defeat the Red Nocturnes here and run around the corner to enter the Entrance Hall
- Right away go back to the Castle Gates and the Nocturnes will spawn again. Repeat this until you have all the shards you need.
A 6% drop rate might seem low, but this method has you defeating lots of Nocturnes in a short amount of time (easily a hundred of them in twenty minutes) so the odds are in your favor.
Let’s take a look at these nimble Nocturnes, as well as some other less-effective ways to farm Blaze Shards:
Red Nocturnes
Much like every other member of the Nocturne family, Red Nocturnes specialize in one form of magic.
Their specialty? Fire.
Makes sense, given their color and drops.
They love to speed around and pelt Sora with Fire and Fira.
When at lower levels (or higher difficulties), they can actually get annoying to deal with. Magic works great against magic, though.
Obviously, Blizzard magic will make short work of them, but you can alternatively hit them with a Stop spell and knock their HP to zero when they’re stuck.
Red Nocturnes also tend to always travel in packs, both with themselves and other Heartless. Once you reach the second half of the game, this can prove to be a bother when they start appearing with heavy-hitters like Wyverns and Wizards. Stop works on them, too … just sayin’ …
White Mushrooms
White Mushrooms can drop all kinds of goodies, including what we’re here for: Blaze Shards.
When you come across a gregarious gang of White Mushrooms, they’ll simply wander about striking poses. Each pose requires that you cast an appropriate spell. Match them three times and ta-dah! You’ll get a prize.
The best place to make Mushrooms appear is in the Deep Jungle. Enter via the Camp save point then exit and enter the tent until you see your spawn.
What we’re looking for is them to start shivering.
Once they do, blast them with a fire spell. If the third spell is a fire one then you’re promised a Blaze Shard.
However, this method takes time. Lots of it.
You not only have to get the Mushrooms to appear, but then you also have to wait until they require the correct amount of fire spells–which might not happen.
White Mushrooms are good for a lot of things, but maybe Blaze Shards isn’t one of them. But you can if you want!
Bambi (Traverse Town)
When you summon Bambi, you’ll start filling his charge bar by defeating Heartless.
Depending on how many times you fill the bar before Bambi’s MP is depleted and he goes away, you’ll get a prize.
Prizes vary depending on where you are when you summon the boy.
To try for some Blaze Shards, go to Traverse Town. Anywhere in the Second and Third District will do.
If you can fill the bar twice here, you’ll have a 40% chance of a Blaze Shard. Fill it thrice and it’s a 60% chance.
Good odds, but this too is time-consuming.
In the time it takes to summon Bambi, fill the bars, and then leave to reset you could have earned ten times the Shards at Hollow Bastion.
Still, if you want to take it slow and steady, Bambi is the one for you.
Using Blaze Shards
You’ll need 12 Blaze Shards to make one of everything that requires them.
Mega-Ethers are handy, but farming Elixirs and Megalixirs is easier and more cost-effective when it comes to healing.
However, the Atlas Armlet is a solid piece of equipment and the Golem Chain is a great early-to-mid game accessory.
Remember: to make the Ultima Weapon you’ll need to make one of everything anyway, so farming Blaze Shards is totally worth it!
