← Back to Synthesis Materials List
Dark Matters can be found all over the many worlds of Kingdom Hearts. But the only way to farm for them is to gather materials and synthesize them at the Moogle Shop.
However, the 11 Dark Matters that you can find in chests and as rewards across the many worlds is more than enough to make everything that needs them via synthesis.
Here’s where all the Dark Matters are located:
Dark Matter Chests | |
---|---|
World | Location |
Traverse Town | Synthesize at the Moogle Shop |
Wonderland | On the balcony in the Tea Party Garden. Enter from the Bizarre Room after moving the clock. |
Olympus Coliseum | Clear the Pegasus Cup |
Deep Jungle | Get all the fruit in the third part of the Jungle Slider minigame |
Agrabah | On a high ledge in Main Street. Enter from the Plaza area and platform over to it. |
Monstro | Activate the White Trinity in Chamber 6 |
Halloween Town | Behind a skeleton in the Cemetery |
Neverland | Activate the Yellow Trinity in the Hold. |
Hollow Bastion | In the Waterway, freeze one of the bubbles and use it to get to the chest. |
Hollow Bastion | In the Grand Hall, next to the stairway leading up. |
Thousand-Acre Woods | On a tree branch just behind the see-saw that Tigger and Roo are using. |
The End of the World | On one of the top platforms in the Great Crevasse area. |
We’ll cover each of these locations in more detail below.
#1: Traverse Town
It should be noted that Dark Matter was not featured in the initial 2002 release of Kingdom Hearts. In all subsequent re-releases (Final Mix and 1.5), you can use the Moogle Shop to make as many Dark Matters as you’d like.
The recipe for Dark Matters is as follows:
- 9 Lucid Shards
- 1 Gale
- 2 Mythril
Lucid Shards are dropped by Shadow Heartless. It is a very common enemy and you should already have plenty of Shards simply by going through the story.
Gales are obtained from Invisibles and Angel Stars, two enemies that only appear in the final room before the final save point in the final dungeon.
Mythril is crafted at the Moogle Shop.
#2: Wonderland
Drink the Big Potion in the Bizarre Room to, you know, turn big. And then interact with the teddy bear.
Then move the clock that comes out of the wall.
Shrink back down and go through the door you just opened to get to the Balcony in the Tea Party Garden where the chest awaits.
#3: Olympus Coliseum
This one’s easy: just clear the Pegasus Cup. Not the time trial or solo run, just the vanilla version and you’ll be rewarded with a Dark Matter.
#4: Deep Jungle
You’ll have to collect all the fruit in the third segment of the tree sliding minigame to get this Dark Matter. This means collecting enough fruit in the first two, as well as knowing the correct paths to take.
This can get annoying due to the weird controls and the fact that Tarzan loves blocking your view.
#5: Agrabah
Start in Aladdin’s house then exit to the Plaza.
From here, leave through the highest exit to Main Street. There’s a chest on one of the tallest platforms that has a Dark Matter in it.
#6: Monstro
Activate the White Trinity in Chamber 6. That’s all.
#7: Halloween Town
Behind a hanging skeleton in the Cemetery area (pictured above).
You can get there by traversing the gravestone doorways in the Moonlight Hill area.
#8: Neverland
For this Dark matter you just need to activate the Yellow Trinity in the Hold (you’ll have to come back for this one after clearing the world though).
#9: Hollow Bastion
In the Waterways at Hollow Bastion, freeze the second bubble you come across with a Blizzard spell. Then use the icy cube to climb up to where the chest is with your Dark Matter.
Also in Hollow Bastion’s Grand Hall, a chest will be sitting out in the open here with some Dark Matter. You’ll find it next to the stairs pictured above.
#10: Thousand-Acre Woods
This dark matter is in a chest on a semi-obscured tree branch right behind Tigger and Roo’s seesaw. You’ll have to glide to it from one of the nearby stumps.
#11: The End of the World
In the Giant Crevasse area, look for a chest near some crystals on the higher platforms. Kind of easy to miss.
Using Dark Matter
Dark Matter is a key ingredient to a lot of really awesome items, including the Ultima Weapon. You’ll need 14 to make one of everything that requires them, so you’ll have to synthesize a few Matters to get there.
The Ultima Weapon is Sora’s best Keyblade, so you’ll want that, and the EXP Earring and EXP Bracelet boost experience earned by 20% and 30% respectively. They’re pretty sweet little accessories and will help you get to 100 before you know it.
In short: Dark Matters are pretty cool.
