Thunder Shards drop primarily from the Yellow Opera Heartless. The best place to farm these little fellas is in Neverland’s Pirate Ship.
Enter at the Hold save point and exit the room to immediately encounter six Yellow Operas. After that, simply do circles around the below-deck areas of the Ship – most of them contain Yellow Operas.
This farming route is made even easier if you have the Encounters Up ability, as all you’ll have to do then is enter and exit the save point room to respawn everything. Even without it, it’s easy-peasy to do laps and fight loads of the floating Opera buddies.
Yellow Operas
These are the Thunder variant of the floating-mage Heartless.
They do all the same stuff their siblings do:
Float in wide circles, move quickly while doing it, and cast spells.
In this case, their spell of choice is Thunder, which can get annoying if left unchecked.
Thankfully, Yellow Operas aren’t too much of a challenge and just about anything you throw at them will send them on their way. Blizzard works, but really you’re best off just bopping them with your keyblade. It’s very effective.
You could also use Stop magic, if you’re feeling kinda spicy.
White Mushrooms
These pale fungi can also drop Thunder Shards.
When they float in a pillar of light, cast Thunder on them. If this is the third spell, then they’ll drop a Shard 100%. Only if it’s the third spell, though. So just do whatever for the first two.
The best place to hunt White Mushrooms for this item is in the Deep Jungle. They have a chance to appear right outside the tent save point, making it easy to leave the world.
Bambi (Deep Jungle)
Speaking of the Deep Jungle…
If you summon Bambi here and fill his bar, you’ll have a chance at a Thunder Shard. Fill it twice and you’ll have 40%, get it three times and you’ll have a 60% chance.
Perhaps not the best odds, considering the work, but if you’re farming for something in the Deep Jungle anyway, maybe consider it a fun side venture.
Using Thunder Shards
You’ll need 12 Thunder Shards to craft one of everything that requires them.
This includes stuff like the fantastic Atlas Armlet, which has the biggest accessory Strength boost in the game. Go get farming!
