Wellspring Gems are dropped by a wide variety of enemies, with the tougher enemies having much higher drop rates. Their best spots for farming are in San Fransokyo and the Kingdom of Corona.
The Mechanitaurs drop Wellspring Gems in San Fransokyo, while the Chaos Carriage drops them at a very high rate in the Kingdom of Corona.
Note: Wellspring Gems cannot be bought or synthesized at the Moogle Shop. You can only obtain them through regular farming methods.
San Fransokyo Farming Route
Enter from the North District: Night save point and head to the back of the tall building right in front of you.
Mechanitaurs spawn under tall buildings or over the main roads.
As soon as you make a left turn under the building, a couple of Mechanitaurs will appear along with a few Neoshadows.
Mechanitaurs are basically a re-skin of the Satyrs. They are more aggressive and have a more mechanical look about their armor. They have large screws on their shoulder pads and the horns on their helmets look like tiny steam engines.
They have strong physical attacks and they can charge at you or knock you off the ground using uppercuts.
Just stay out of their way and use your strongest area of effect spells like Thundaga to take them out quickly.
Mechanitaurs will drop Wellspring Gems at a decent 12% drop rate.
Just remember to unequip your Lucky Strikes otherwise, the game will prioritize crystal drops instead of gems.
Then after you clear the area, you can warp in and out of the North District: Night save point to make them respawn.
Kingdom of Corona Farming Route
Land at the Hills save point and head towards the north of the map.
Upon entering a clearing, a Chaos Carriage will appear along with a few Reapers.
The Chaos Carriage looks like a horse pulling a carriage with a brick fort on top.
Up close, it appears like the front half of the horse’s body is fused with the carriage. The horse is wearing a shining armor plate on its chest and its mane is covered with a mask showing yellow curved eyes.
Your best option is to use long-range spells like Firaga to attack it from a distance.
The Chaos Carriage has an excellent 20% chance of dropping Wellspring Gems.
Stock up on your ethers and keep using high-level spells to whittle away its HP.
Only a single Chaos Carriage spawns in this area. But with its high drop rate combined with your Lucky Strike ability, you can be almost guaranteed to get a Wellspring Gem each run.
But to keep farming more, you can make the enemy group respawn just by heading down south and returning back.
Battlegate 12
At the end-game, you can farm Wellspring Gems from Battlegate 12, located in San Fransokyo.
To reach Battlegate 12, land at the North District save point (night or day).
Right where you appear, look to your left for a tall circular building with giant fans floating over it.
Wall-run to the top of this building. At the top of the helipad, you will find the blue crystal entrance to Battlegate 12.
Using Wellspring Gems
Wellspring Gems are required for twenty recipes, and you must have at least 78 gems in total to synthesize at least one copy of each recipe.
